The most common misconception about hashtags
Advice such as “use all 30 hashtags” or “use popular hashtags” reflects older formulas. In the 2025–2026 algorithm, relevance to the account's topic and fit with the target audience have a much larger effect. Hashtags whose effectiveness has not been validated with data contribute little to reach.
Five hashtag strategy principles
- ① Use 3–5 account-topic hashtags consistently, directly tied to your account's identity.
- ② Use 3–5 content-topic hashtags that match each individual post.
- ③ Prioritize small and medium hashtags: those with tens to hundreds of thousands of posts often offer better exposure odds than the largest tags.
- ④ Use brand and community hashtags: traffic from a specific community can significantly increase engagement.
- ⑤ Rotate and A/B test regularly: repeating the same hashtag set can stall reach, so periodic changes are needed.
How Forcletter can help
- Statistics on each hashtag's average contribution to reach, saves and shares.
- Automatically detect stalled reach when the same hashtag set is repeated.
- AI agent Poki suggests hashtag sets that match your topics.
What Forcletter cannot resolve
- Hashtags work alongside content quality, hooks and captions rather than as an independent growth lever.
- Adding more hashtags does not automatically increase views.
Hashtag patterns to avoid
- Tags encouraging artificial reciprocal engagement, such as the Korean #좋반 (like back), #맞팔 (follow for follow) and #선팔 (follow first).
- Filling a post only with trending hashtags unrelated to its content.
- Hashtags restricted under Meta policies, which may block reach for the post itself.
