Calculate and understand Instagram engagement rate

ER summarizes interactions relative to reach or follower count. The denominator changes its meaning. Forcletter brings engagement metrics together for posts and Reels so you can interpret the response.

What is engagement rate?

ER compresses likes, comments, saves and shares into a percentage relative to an audience measure. A large account can have little engagement, while a smaller one can receive many saves and shares. It helps separate size from response and supports content comparisons or sponsorship discussions. To calculate it consistently, collect the underlying interactions and the chosen denominator.

The formula: include saves and shares

  • Numerator: add likes, comments, saves and shares. Counting only likes and comments leaves out meaningful responses.
  • Denominator: follower-based ER = interactions ÷ followers × 100; reach-based ER = interactions ÷ reach × 100.
  • Use reach for response among viewers, or followers for response relative to account size. Keep the same basis in comparisons.
  • Average several posts: use recent 9–12 posts rather than judging a single result.
  • Separate formats: Reels may reach many non-followers, changing the denominator and apparent percentage.

Metrics used in engagement rate

  • Likes — a lightweight response.
  • Comments — conversation and involvement.
  • Saves — an intention to revisit.
  • Shares — distribution beyond the viewer.
  • Reach — unique accounts that saw the content.
  • Impressions — total displays including repeats.
  • Followers — the denominator for follower-based ER.

Why account size changes the benchmark

Compare similar accounts rather than treating a higher percentage as universally better. Smaller accounts often have a denser, more engaged audience; larger accounts may include more casual followers. Five percent at 10,000 followers and five percent at 500,000 are not equivalent. Compare similar topics and sizes, and prioritize your own month-to-month trend. External benchmarks may use different denominators or exclude saves and shares.

What to check when engagement is low

Do not stop at the total. Break the flow into reach, saves, shares and comments to identify where it weakens.

  • Low reach: check the opening hook, cover, posting time and topic consistency.
  • High reach but few saves: review information density, summaries and checklist formats.
  • Saves without shares: consider why someone would send the content to a friend, through relevance, humor or a discussion point.
  • Few comments: add a relevant question, choice or invitation to share an opinion.
  • Engagement without follows: examine profile conversion separately.

Who this is for

  • Creators with enough regular posts and Reels to compare.
  • Influencers preparing engagement data for collaborations or rate discussions.
  • Operators moving beyond likes to include saves and shares.
  • Marketers planning strategy separately for feed posts and Reels.

When this is not enough

  • New accounts with very few posts should first build a useful sample.
  • Personal accounts need professional-account insights for reach and related metrics.
  • Artificially increasing engagement through bought reactions or automation is not supported.
  • A single post’s ER is not enough to judge an entire account; look at averages and trends.
